What is end grain wood?
End grain cutting boards are made from end pieces of wood. It usually has a checkerboard pattern, which is the main feature that lets you know it is an end grain cutting board. This type of wood cutting board is a little more expensive, but some people consider it valuable because it is better for the knives. End grain cutting boards have a "self-healing" factor because the fibers close after they are cut by the knife.

Elms are an excellent choice for landscaping in shady areas and high-traffic locations. Their shape, size and flexibility are so impressive that they were once a popular tree for planting along roadsides and public spaces. However, a disease outbreak in the early 20th century took a heavy toll on these tree varieties, resulting in the death of millions of such specimens.

Interesting facts
The elm is an attractive tree with spreading branches that have a vase-like shape. Identifying the elm is not difficult as the tree parts have typical characteristics that distinguish them from other trees. The height varies depending on the variety, but the average height is 27 meters with almost the same width. The diameter of a healthy tree is about 0.5 to 1.2 meters.

The foliage is arranged alternately on the branches and turns yellow in autumn. The 7 to 12 centimetre long leaves have a serrated edge, are single or double toothed and taper towards the apex.

Bark
The bark is grayish in color and has scales, furrows, and grooves. The peeling bark of the Chinese elm is a desirable feature for use as an ornamental tree. It is slippery, and its inner fibrous part is used in herbal medicine to relieve various medical problems.

Flower and fruit
Their petals are inconspicuous. They generally develop in spring, are small and green or red in color. Some elms bear fruit, others do not. The type of fruit is called a samara, which can be recognized by the small notch in the middle. The green fruit, which has two wing-like structures, contains a round seed.

Planting factors
Planting these trees is no different from planting any other deciduous tree. You can choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained, neutral soil (preferably clayey or sandy loam) for planting. In addition, maintaining optimal ventilation is a must to reduce the risk of disease.

Care
During the first stages of growth or until the tree has become accustomed to the location, the elm tree requires thorough care. Make sure the soil is always moist to ensure rapid root growth. After the tree has grown, you should prune it every three years to avoid weak branches and promote healthy growth.
